#154: The Obligation of Women in Havalah (Part 4)

  1. A man who has fulfilled the mitzvah of Havdalah should preferably not recite Havdalah for a female who has not yet heard Havdalah, since poskim disagree as to whether he can fulfill her obligation in this case. Rather, she should recite it herself if necessary (Shemirat Shabbat K’hilchatah 58:17). Similarly, if one’s daughter over bat mitzvah age came home late and missed the family Havdalah, she should recite it herself.
  2. An Ashkenazi man should not fulfill his obligation for Havdalah in shul if female family members are waiting for him at home to recite it. The reason is that as we learned previously, Ashkenazi women should try to hear Havdalah from a man, and as we learned above, a man who has already fulfilled the mitzvah should not recite it for a woman afterward.
