#138: What to Eat for Seudah Shelishit (Part 2)

  1. Ideally, one should recite Hamotzi at seudah shelishit with lechem mishneh (two whole loaves of bread or challah), just like at the first two Shabbat meals. However, if one does not have sufficient bread, challah, rolls, or matzah, one may use one whole loaf instead. Alternatively, if one is too full to eat bread (as in the previous posting), one may use two whole units of food whose berachah is mezonot (e.g., two whole cakes) instead.
  2. Poskim disagree whether in the case of #1, the mezonot whole units must be larger than the size of a k’zayit. Some hold that they must be the size of a k'zayit (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 55:5, n.13), while others maintain that in cases of need, both lechem mishneh of bread and lechem mishneh of mezonot may be less than the size of a k'zayit (R. Chaim Pinchas Scheinberg, cited in "The Radiance of Shabbos," p.79).
