#118: Reciting Hamotzi and Distributing the Challah on Shabbat (Part 1)

  1. When reciting Hamotzi, one should hold the challot in one’s hands to demonstrate one’s love for the mitzvah (Shulchan Aruch 274:1). For this reason, one who is wearing gloves or touching any other item separating between one’s hands and the challah should remove them before reciting Hamotzi (Mishnah Berurah 167:23; Yalkut Yosef 274:14).
  2. Similarly, if the challah is wrapped in foil or enclosed in a plastic bag, it should be removed before reciting Hamotzi (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchata 55:38; R. Shmuel Kamenetsky, Kovetz Halachot, Shabbat 14:20).
