#97: Kiddush B'makom Seudah (Part 4)

  1. To fulfill the requirement of Kiddush b’makom seudah, one must begin the meal (whether it is one’s actual meal, mezonot food, or wine) immediately following the Kiddush (Rema 273:5) and not interrupt even for a short time (Mishnah Berurah 273:12). Some say a short break is not problematic (Aruch Hashulchan 273:1). All would agree that one should not engage in extended conversation between Kiddush and the meal, and that everyone should be encouraged to begin eating immediately or wash netilat yadayim (if bread will be eaten).
  2. As discussed, to fulfill the requirement of Kiddush b’makom seudah, one must also eat the meal in the same location as the Kiddush. In this context, the entire room is considered the same “location,” and one may recite Kiddush in one part of the room and then eat in a different part of the room. Lechatchilah, it is best to have in mind when reciting the Kiddush that one plans to move (Shulchan Aruch 273:1; Mishnah Berurah 3).
