3,517. Transferring Sanctity From One Coin to Another
Hilchos Maaser Sheini and Neta Revai 4:4
When redeeming second tithe produce, one doesn’t redeem it as second tithe, but rather as secular produce. He says, “How much is this secular produce worth?” This is the case even if everyone knows that the produce was second tithe so that it not be devalued. [Second tithe sells for less than secular produce because of all the limitations regarding how it may be used.]
Hilchos Maaser Sheini and Neta Revai 4:5
The sanctity of the coins used to redeem second tithe may not be transferred to other coins, even if both sets of coins are silver or both are brass, nor from silver to brass or from brass to silver. If one violated the law and transferred the sanctity, the transfer is effective.
