1,124. Educating One's Children
164:10 If a woman miscarried and later gave birth to a healthy son, she must to consult a Torah authority regarding whether or not the baby requires redemption.
165:1 Every father is obligated to educate his children in all the mitzvos, both Torah laws and rabbinic laws, each mitzvah according to the child's understanding. They must also be taught to separate from every forbidden thing as per Proverbs 22:6, "Teach a child according to his ability." If the child does not refrain from these things, he should be spanked but not harshly as ignorant people do. Any intelligent person will understand the difference. (Editor’s note: Don’t decide to spank your kids just because you read it here. Consult with your spouse, your rabbi, and your child’s pediatrician.) One must in particular teach his children not to lie and to always tell the truth, as well as to stay away from making oaths. These things are the responsibility of both the father and the child's teachers.
