164:6 The Turei Zahav wrote regarding the practice for the kohein to return all or part of the redemption money to the father and the matter requires further investigation. One who wants to perform the mitzvah properly should choose a needy kohein who is learned and pious. The father and the kohein arrange between themselves whether the kohein will keep the money or if it is a gift with the condition that it be returned.
164:7 A mother is not obligated to redeem her son. If the father has died, the local beis din redeems the baby.
