#76: Eating Before Kiddush (Part 1)
- According to the Shulchan Aruch (271:4), it is forbidden for individuals over bar or bat mitzvah age to eat or drink anything before Kiddush on Friday night, including water. The prohibition takes effect at sunset or whenever one accepts Shabbat, if it is before that time (Magen Avraham 271:5). Guidelines for Shabbat day will be discussed in future posts.
- To avoid being too thirsty or hungry before Kiddush, one should ideally plan ahead and drink or eat something before accepting Shabbat. If necessary, one may take medicine with water before Kiddush, though not with other liquids. (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 52:3)
