#46: Accepting Shabbat When Lighting Candles (Part 2)

  1. Based on the previous post, Sephardic women may drive to shul or take a cab to the Kotel after lighting candles on Friday night, even after the regular candle lighting time (provided that they accept Shabbat at least a few minutes before sunset, as will be discussed in next week’s posts). However, Ashkenazi poskim disagree as to whether going to the Kotel is considered a sufficiently important need to allow stipulating that one accepts Shabbat later (Shemirat Shabbat Khilchatah ch.43, Tzitz Eliezer 10:19), and the same would apply to riding in a car to shul on Friday afternoon.
  2. Men who light candles (such as if the wife is not home) need not accept Shabbat at the regular candle lighting time and should have in mind they will accept Shabbat later after davening Mincha, at least a few minutes before sunset. (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 43:26).
