#43: Lighting Shabbat Candles Away from Home (Part 2)

  1. If a husband goes away for Shabbat alone, his wife can fulfill the mitzvah for him through the candles she lights at home (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 45:3). His obligation can also be fulfilled by his host or by whoever lights in the eating area. This person should have in mind that the lighting includes the guests as well. If he eats alone, he may light candles there without reciting a berachah.
  2. Many poskim hold that if he has his own room for sleeping or eating, he must light candles there (Mishnah Berurah, Orach Chaim 263:32). However, this lighting is mainly for shalom bayit purposes (to make sure he can see). Therefore, electric lights in the room or any light from a hallway, window, etc. that allows him to see nominally is sufficient. (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 45:3).
