#39: Lighting Shabbat Candles in a Hotel (Part 2)

  1. R. Mordechai Eliyahu (Maamar Mordechai 4:13), R. Neuwirth (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 45:9), and Rav Moshe Feinstein (quoted in "Radiance of Shabbos") hold that one may not recite a berachah on candles in a hotel lobby due to the difficulty mentioned in the previous post.
  2. Three possible solutions to this problem are as follows. First, if one eats coffee or cake in the lobby or place of lighting after the meal, the location would count as a place of eating, if the candles are still lit (R. Mordechai Eliyahu, ibid.). Second, one can turn on the electric lights in one’s hotel room and then immediately light candles in the lobby with a berachah. This is effective according to the many poskim who hold that one can recite a berachah on electric lights (Piskei Teshuvot 263:27). Third, one may follow the second option and simply recite the berachah in the room at that time (Yalkut Yosef 263:19).
