#32: Using Electric Lights for Candle Lighting on Shabbos (Part 3)
- According to many of the opinions mentioned in the previous post that allow using electric lights for hadlakat neirot, LED or fluorescent lights would also be acceptable (R. Eliashiv), though some say it has to bear some similarity to fire, such as an incandescent bulb with a filament (see Peninei Halachah 4:5).
- In a normal situation at home, one should certainly light regular candles, as is the common custom. However, the machloket concerning electric lights is relevant in a hotel or hospital if one is unable to light actual candles in the proper location (to be discussed in a future post). In such a situation, one may rely on the many poskim who allow turning on the electric lights in the room with intent that this fulfill the mitzvah of Shabbat candles, and according to some, one may even recite a berachah.
