1,093. How to Self-Examine
159:6 On each day of the seven days of counting, the woman should optimally check herself twice per day, once in the morning and once close to twilight. After the fact, even if she checked herself only once on the first day and once on the seventh day, there is reason to be lenient. This is only if she checked on the first and seventh days. If she checked on the first day and the eighth day, she only has the eighth day and must count an additional six days.
159:7 All of a woman's self-examinations, whether for the hefesk taharah or for the seven clean days, must be done with a white cotton cloth that has already been broken in, or with clean, soft white cotton or wool. The woman inserts the cloth vaginally into all the internal folds at least as far as the male member penetrates in order to see if any red stains are found. If she can't reach that deeply, she should do the best she can. It would be preferable for at least one examination to be the depth of penetration. Virgins who are checking themselves prior to marriage should also do so to the best of their abilities.
