1,089. Immersion After a Miscarriage

158:2 Some authorities say that the couple must separate from on the eve of the forty-first day after giving birth to a boy and the eve of the eighty-first day for a girl out of concern that she may see blood as when she expects her period. Other authorities differ. A diligent person should take precautions. If she had a miscarriage and it is not clear if the fetus was male or female, the couple should separate on both the eve of the forty-first day and the eve of the eighty-first day.

158:3 If woman miscarried and the fetus is not identifiable, the woman must act stringently and count the number of unclean days for a girl. Alternately, she may consult a Torah scholar because in some circumstances one may be lenient.

Similarly, if she miscarried a fetus and subsequently a placenta, even if the fetus was clearly a boy, she must act as for a girl because of the placenta, or consult a Torah authority.
