2,963. One Who Commits a Specific Amount

Hilchos Arachin Vacharamin 3:8

If someone explicitly mentions the amount of a valuation, saying, for example, that he commits his own valuation of 50 sela, or the valuation of person X of 30 sela, then his financial means are irrelevant. In such a case, his property is confiscated as a down payment and the balance remains a debt in which he is obligated until he becomes wealthy and pays it.

Hilchos Arachin Vacharamin 3:9

Similarly, if a person commits his own actual value or that of another person, his financial means are irrelevant because this is like an explicit vow. It’s like one who consecrates a maneh to the Temple; he must give the whole maneh.
