2,567. If the Liver Is Removed

Hilchos Shechita 8:21

If the entire liver is removed, the animal’s a treifa; if an olive-sized piece of it remains in the place where it’s suspended and an olive-sized piece of it remains at the gall bladder, then the animal is permitted. If the liver moved from its place but is still connected to the diaphragm, the animal remains permitted. If the place where the liver is suspended and the piece at the gall bladder are removed, then the animal’s a treifa even if the rest of the liver is intact as it was before.

Hilchos Shechita 8:22

If an olive-sized piece of the liver remained at the gall bladder and another olive-sized piece remained where it’s suspended but the pieces are a little scattered here and there (inside the animal), flattened or stretched out like a strap, then there’s a doubt as to the animal’s status. The Rambam opines that such an animal is prohibited.
