2,565. If Only Some Sinews Were Cut
Hilchos Shechita 8:17
We have discussed how an animal or a bird is a treifa if its legs were cut off at the intersection of the sinews only because the sinews were cut. Accordingly, if only the sinews were cut off, the animal’s a treifa even if the foot remains intact. This is again because the intersection of the sinews was severed.
Hilchos Shechita 8:18
If only the thick sinew of an animal was cut, the animal remains permitted because the other two sinews are still there; if the two thin sinews were cut, the animal remains permitted because the thick sinew is bigger than the two of them combined. In either scenario, the intersection of the sinews wasn’t removed in its entirety, just the lesser portion of it. If the greater part of each sinew was severed, then the animal’s a treifa; such is certainly the case if all the sinews were cut or removed.
