2,520. Comparing Punctures
Hilchos Shechita 3:24
If the trachea was punctured on both sides with a hole in which the width of issar would fit, it’s a neveila. If it was cut lengthwise, then even if only the smallest piece of the area designated for shechita remains above and below the cut, it’s valid.
Hilchos Shechita 3:25
Let’s say that a trachea was punctured but we don’t know whether it happened before or after slaughter. In such a case, we puncture it again in a different spot and compare the two holes. If they resemble one another, the animal is permitted. We only compare a puncture in a large ring of the trachea to another puncture in a large ring, and a puncture in a small ring of the trachea to another puncture in a small ring, but we don’t compare a puncture in a large ring of the trachea to a puncture in a small ring. The trachea comprises a series of rings. Between the large rings there are smaller rings, which are soft.
