2,518. A Punctured Esophagus

Hilchos Shechita 3:20

The esophagus has two membranes – the outer one is red and the inner one is white. If only one membrane is perforated, the animal is fit for slaughter; if both are punctured even the smallest amount in a place where shechita might be performed, it’s a neveila. Regardless of whether it was slaughtered in the place of the puncture or elsewhere, shechita is ineffective on such an animal. If both membranes are punctured, the animal is a neveila even if the holes don’t line up.

Hilchos Shechita 3:21

If the esophagus is punctured and a scab forms over the perforation, it makes no difference; the esophagus is considered just as punctured. If a thorn is found standing in the esophagus, there's a doubt as to whether the animal is a neveila. We’re concerned that maybe the hole scabbed over, rendering it imperceptible. However, if a thorn is found lying horizontally in the esophagus, we’re unconcerned because most animals in the wilderness are constantly eating thorns.
